Witnessing the Rise: Hemustbefabulous and the making of Injury Season

By Wavy.Sasso / Wavy Kulture

I still remember it vividly — my first encounter with HeMustBeFabulous. It was on a platform called Joint Effort on YouTube. He was performing a raw, heartfelt joint titled "Ke Wetse", and from

the jump, I knew there was something special about this guy. His authenticity, his relatability, the way he delivered each bar like he meant every word, it pulled me in. Immediately after that performance, I found myself deep in a YouTube rabbit hole looking for more. And that’s when I stumbled upon Theymustbemob, a channel that hosted more of his music.

That search led me to a gem: a project called MORA — eight tracks deep, and at that time (around April 2024), only available on YouTube. No Spotify. No Apple Music. Just raw uploads. And yo, that body of work? Solid. You could hear the hunger, the pain, the finesse. After running the tape a couple of times, I didn’t hesitate, I jumped onto Facebook to make noise about it. People needed to hear this!

Fast-forward a few months later, July to be exact — MORA hit 50,000 views on YouTube, and finally got its formal release on all major streaming platforms. But with a twist — it came back rebranded as MORA 0420, and with two extra tracks. I believe the fans demanded it, and Fabulous delivered. That decision alone? A game-changer. His listenership grew. People could now Shazam his music, add it to playlists, share it — the whole nine. He became more discoverable, and that’s when the buzz started multiplying.

Not long after that strategic move, he dropped Bula, which quickly became a street smash! But the tipping point came when a track called "Chingos" by King Spatjas featuring HeMustBeFabulous started trending heavy on TikTok around April 2025. The song tackled the deeply sensitive and culturally significant topic of boys’ initiation, and it hit home for many. It wasn’t just a viral track — it led to a lot of break outsbut atleast in the end peace was made. It earned him serious street cred, and rightfully so.

From that moment on, things began moving fast for him. We were witnessing the come-up in real time. What made it even sweeter was that I had been following his journey since the early days. He went from a YouTube-only presence to being acknowledged by giants in the game.

Soon after, Priddy Ugly announced a deluxe edition of DUST, and guess who made the cut? HeMustBeFabulous, featured on a joint called "Ho Etsahalang?" alongside none other than Cassper Nyovest. The song got its first exclusive spin on DJ Speedsta’s 5HipHopNights show on 5FM — elite rollout.

He also performed at Cotton Fest this year — another milestone that certified his spot in the culture. And just when we thought the wave was plateauing, he teased a new album titled INJURY SEASON after signing a distribution deal with Universal Music Group. Now that’s elevation.

But here's the part that gave me chills: he showed up at KandyLand Fest in a wheelchair and on crutches — not due to actual injury, but as a calculated move to push the narrative of INJURY SEASON. That’s artistry. That’s commitment to storytelling.

So far, he’s dropped "Celebrity" and "Plan", with the latter only available on YouTube as a music video. And I suspect he's intentionally applying the same strategy he used with MORA: build momentum on one platform, gather a concentrated listener base, then expand distribution once the numbers are undeniable. Smart move.

We're not just watching a rapper rise — we’re witnessing the crafting of a cultural moment. INJURY SEASON isn’t just a title; it’s a campaign, a statement, a chapter in South African hip-hop’s unfolding story.

And as someone who’s been locked in since “Ke Wetse,” I can say this: HeMustBeFabulous is exactly what the game needs right now.
